See you in September, Fine Diners

EVERYONE'S FAVORITE reservationless restaurant, Canele in Atwater Village, is on vacation for 2 weeks.

P.S. - To the know-it-all at the next table at brunch at Canele yesterday, maybe it's OK to generalize based on anecdotal observations. In a big, diverse place like Los Angeles (without the benefit of actual census data) maybe there's no other way.

Yes, Atwater Villagers Would Rather Not Call Ahead

TIME TO REVISIT Canele, Glendale Boulevard's finest local eatery, in this Metromix profile of Lot 1 chef Josef Centeno:
We meet at Canele, a restaurant Centeno, 34, lists first among his favorites on the east side of town. It's a sliver of a space with exposed brick and ceilings high enough to prevent the onset of claustrophobia.

The small dining room dictates a "no reservations" policy, a first-come, first-served axiom that favors the locals of Atwater Village - yet the Mediterranean-inflected cuisine draws foodists from all over the city.

A neighborhood joint with excellent food everyone wants to try? We see the appeal.

LA Foodies Still Heart Canele

THE COMPLETE RECIPE in tomorrow's edition of the LA Times: "At Canele in Atwater Village (3219 Glendale Blvd.), chef Corina Weibel serves a perfectly-seared snapper fillet ... It recently caught the attention of staff writer Amy Scattergood."

June 27, 2007

Not a Hand Fruit

FROM THE LA TIMES countdown to tomato time:
"'When will tomatoes come so we can have that luscious, olivey tomato background?' moans Corina Weibel of Canele in Atwater Village. She's dying to pair wedges of assorted heirloom tomatoes, seasoned simply with herbs and shallots and tossed with torn croutons, with crispy-skinned seared snapper, drizzled with a little olive oil and lemon juice."

One Down, 98 To Go

EVEN BEFORE THE FIRST anniversary of its opening, neighborhood bistro Canele (3219 Glendale Blvd.) has earned a spot on Jonathan Gold's 99 Essential Restaurants for LA. Sayeth LA Weekly's Pulitzer Prize winner:
"In Atwater Village, Canele can feel a lot like an ongoing dinner party that just happens to tolerate strangers at its tables.... The chef/owner is Corina Weibel, a Nancy Silverton protegee who also cooked for a while at Lucques, and she works the farmers-market-driven urban rustic side of new Los Angeles cooking... This is cooking worthy of the good china."
The recognition comes on the heels of Sunday's Los Angeles Times love letter:
"The most coveted seats at Canele in Atwater Village are at the large communal table in the front window. New parents are showing off their baby to an aunt or two at one end of the table, while a couple on a date is seated at the other end. The food comes - shrimp and avocado salad sparked with lime, cilantro and chile, dandelion salad in a piquant vinaigrette, herb-roasted rack of lamb, a simple omelet - any one of which may inspire someone at the table to order more of the same."
Mrs. Newbie and I finally tried Canele last weekend - just drinks and dessert - and we must disagree with one point. The best table is the really bar, overlooking Canele's petite open kitchen.

Ask for it. Watch how Corina and staff whisper their way through a plating emergency. Or an undercooked lamb. Or customers who irrationally refuse the restaurant's namesake, a two-bite caramelized confection, on their way out the door.

For a drama-infused reality-show city like LA, that's essential.

The Great Glendale Takeover of 2007

Restaurant Takeover
FROM WHAT HAS BEEN hailed as the best restaurant mapping thingy ever, comes this breaking news. Urbanspoon maps show that former northeast Los Angeles neighborhood Atwater Village has been claimed in a hostile takeover by the adjacent city of Glendale.

More than 80 years after the failed Tropico-LA-Glendale Mega-Merger, this new foodie invasion is leaving a suburban aftertaste in the mouths of Atwater Village residents.
  • Asia Los Feliz, previously named for a neighborhood on the other side of Atwater Village, could be redubbed Asia Glendale, immediately losing cred with anyone under age 50
  • Tam O'Shanter Inn, formerly the 3rd most popular restaurant in Atwater Village, is now the 4th most popular restaurant in Glendale
  • Canele, to maintain its media darling status, must now attempt to impress those hard-asses at the Glendale News Press
I guess despite how the mayor of Los Angeles corrected him on the air, FOX11 reporter Rick Lozano was right all along.
