THIS PHOTO by Dan Gabai was taken more than a year ago, Sept. 13, 2008, back when street lamps on the Glendale-Hyperion bridge viaduct system came on at night. These days, the lamps stay dark. The corners and shadows along and beneath the bridge and its staircases and sidewalks are even darker. What gives? Can't be all about money savings for the city, especially on a bridge where City Council spent $2,000 to install American flags. (Which, by the way, some might say, ought not be waving in the dark.)
UPDATE: Week later. Lights on.

I've posted messages about this on Councilman Garcetti's facebook page and did receive a response from his deputy for Atwater Village, Arsen Melikyan, that the city is working on these.
They came back on a couple weeks ago, but failed again to work beginning last week.
It is a safety issue and I hope the city makes a bigger effort before somebody gets hurt.
Thanks for putting a spotlight on it.
Remember, 311 is the first way we should be reporting these things. I have called it in and followed up just now, dept of street lighting says they should be repaired by the end of day tomorrow (Friday, 10/16).
I don't think mentioning it to the person who is elected to represent you is necessarily ineffective.
Nor is, it often turns out, blogging about it.
Exactly, Mr. Newbie. In a much more connected world, one should use every platform. Well done.
Unbelievable! Those lights are there for a reason. It's a dangerous area for bicyclists and pedestrians... street lights help drivers spot those vulnerable folks.
Miles, we don't call President Obama when there is a problem with our income tax return, or call the Governor when there is a problem at a State Park. The idea is to let the departments responsible for a task do their jobs and not waste time of the elected officials/staff who have a lot to do already.
I'm just suggesting we first try using the mechanisms already in place, which we'll see soon if they work as expected. I called in Case #201522 on 10/13 at 4:30 and followed up on 10/15 when they said they would have it done 10/16.
Mr. Fixer, Arsen, the councilman's deputy, called me back today to let me know they are still working on it and that the problem should be resolved by next week. He then, rightly and cordially, asked me if I had any other concerns.
Streetlights on the bridge were back on tonight and it sure felt safer.
On clear days such as those these past couple that vantage point from where the photo was taken offers one of my favorite vistas.
