Atwater Village Question of the Week

AN INTERESTING question from a Newbie reader: "Why does the Red Cross have a storage box at Chevy Chase Park [4165 Chevy Chase Drive]? What disaster are they preparing for (or creating)?" Great question. And what the heck is inside? Is it for donations?

UPDATE: It's for distaster preparedness! Details in the comments.

Gang war? A warehouse fire across the street?

This is part of the city's disaster preparedness preparations. The idea is that a major disaster such as an earthquake could trap people in their geographic locations and disrupt transportation as well as food and water distribution. There are a number of containers stationed throughout the city at locations that will become distribution points in case of such a disaster. Inside the container are water supplies, food rations, blankets, etc, that would be necessary in case of such a disaster.

You can learn more about LA's disaster preparedness and train to be part of a disaster response through the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT).

Well, I guess it's good to know that I've got that a few feet from my home. A curious development, nonetheless.

I doubt that it contains water supplies, food rations, blankets etc. And if it does -- the container isn't large enough to have those supplies for the entire neighborhood -- so who gets left out, and who makes that decision? And why don't all neighborhoods have these containers????
