LAST NIGHT'S drive-by shooting in the 3200 block of Casitas Avenue ends in stalemate, according to cbs2.com. The 40-year-old male victim is expected to survive a gunshot wound to the temple. And after a 3-hour pursuit that involved helicopters and street closings in South Atwater Village, police found the 3 suspects (alleged gang members) hiding in a laundry room. Add this one to the list as May goes out with (another) bang. |

We were leaving my house to head out to a movie just before 6:30 on Saturday and saw the police stop the suspects' vehicle. We weren't entirely sure what was going on, until my husband suddenly grabbed my arm and said, "Those are guns." Both suspects and police were running through the streets with guns drawn.
Not a happy experience. But am very glad they got the guys.
Thanks Newbie for the update!
Very upsetting news. This month has been terrible. And we only just moved into the neighborhood.
The police really need to crack down hard on all this gang activity, or we'll be putting our house up for sale, that's for sure!
We saw the cops zooming through the neighborhood as we were heading out to dinner and wondered what was happening. Much later, we heard about 10 shots around 2:30am Sunday, as well.
This doesnt suprise me.I grew up in Atwater Village.Ive been here for 17 years and seen all kinds of stuuf here.I know for sure that things are going to get worse.I think the whole neighborhood is going to change.
Rider,
Why do you think things are going to get worse?
And what do you mean by the whole neigborhood is going to change?
The whole neighborhood is changing for the better.
Thanks for posting this; I rode by the closed streets and watched the helicopters overhead for hours; assumed it was another shooting.
What's the community reaction?
I'm with NICEUPOTEA. There's no real evidence that things are going to get worse (unless you just tout that belief that a bad economy means more crime). From my experience in Atwater, the gang "families" have been here a really long time, and while they're not likely to get foreclosed upon and forced out of Atwater, every open house I visit in the neighborhood is swarming with yuppies (since I assume yuppies are the only ones who can get financing these days?). And all the yuppies who bought houses in 2006/2007 won't be able to move since their mortgages are upside-down, so they're stuck too! I guess Rider could argue that the yuppies will be foreclosed upon since they paid too much for their houses, but I'm pretty sure that the new owners of the yuppified foreclosures will be more yuppies. Poorer yuppies? Maybe. Yuppies interested in gunfighting in the street? Probably not.
Any news on a motive for the shooting and if it was gang related? Thanks Newbie.
