Sing a Song of Suburbs

SOMETIMES OUR FRIENDS across the tracks in Glendale get a bad rap. And sometimes they (or streets named after them) get mentioned in rap. Or rock. Or R&B. You be the judge:
Beastie Boys - Do It
Glendale Boulevard Boulevard
Glendale Boulevard is where I'm at
It's where I'm at, Where I live
Check it out because my head is like a siv

Beck - Debra
I pick you up late at night after work
I said "lady, step inside my Hyundai"
I'm gonna take you up to Glendale
Gonna take you for a real good meal

Bright Eyes - Cleanse Song
On a detox loft through a Glendale park over sidewalk chalk
Someone wrote in red, "start over"
So I muffled my scream on an Oxnard beach
Full of fever dreams that scare you sober
I found only three solid examples. Surely others have immortalized the suburb that brings us both Porto's Bakery and Brand Bookshop.

Call Me an 80s Child

CALL ME, MORE ACCURATELY, an 80s teen. And a bona fide Crowded House fan. This is a deeply talented Kiwi pop band I thought I'd never see again. A band that called it quits more than a decade ago.

Now, 20 years after "Don't Dream It's Over" hit #2 in the US, it's not over. Crowded House quietly re-formed - with Beck's former drummer - for a new album and tour.

The band's first California stop: The Glass House in Pomona. Tickets sold out in 90 minutes. I was too slow.

The band's second California stop: Coachella. Other reunions overshadowed. Bottles flew. I was too old.

Now I patiently wait. Crowded House returns to California, playing two nights in August at the Mountain Winery. Till then, the amateur videos. Enjoy:

Maybe She Knows Silver Lake Is No Good

Any Winehouse Tour Rider
COULD ROCK CHANTEUSE Amy Winehouse not get a decent restaurant recommendation in Silver Lake for tonight? Why else would her Spaceland show, as LAist and Losanjealous report, get canceled mere hours in advance?

Attention venue managers! For future reference, page 4 of Winehouse's tour rider clearly demands "recommendations of GOOD QUALITY restaurants... Chinese, Mexican, grill... Anything good really..."

Surely there must be something in these parts. I guess we'll see if she makes it to Jimmy Kimmel Live tomorrow.

From the 'It's Got To Be An Act' Department

A budding Rolling Stone "journalist" whines: "Tony Toni Tone lied to me. They told a young girl that 'It Never Rains in Southern California.'"

Tony Toni Tone? If Albert Hammond had a grave, he'd be the one rolling.
RELATED: Hear new tracks from the next generation of Hammonds. Rock Insider and Cause=Time post new songs by Albert Hammond Jr., he of The Strokes fame. (Even more embarrassing for above journo.)

Theme Song for Friday in LA

When the hills of Los Angeles are burning
Palm trees are candles in the murder wind
So many lives on the breeze
Even the stars are ill at ease
And Los Angeles is burnin'

(Bad Religion - Los Angeles is Burning)

Not Quite Ready for LA Burnout

But I do like the music. Aquarium Drunkard has posted a three-part "LA Burnout" music series, a 36-song time-travel trip to the late 1960s, early 1970s Laurel Canyon music scene. A must download for Los Angeles newbies and non-newbies alike.

KCRW Top Tunes* of the Day**

* Just because: 1) They're too hard to find on KCRW's site, 2) They're often only posted for one day, 3) Yousendit.com downloads are faster than KCRW.com, and 4) Some of the tunes are actually good.

** And despite the fact that: 1) KCRW's tags are messed up and so music players read the Artist as "KCRWMusic.com" and the Album as "Today's Top Tune," and 2) Someone's bound to get huffy about this.
