Dtox Day Spa: 3 Years and Counting

Dtox Day Spa at Night

WHILE WE SADLY bid adieu to a fave gift shop in the neighborhood, we can still treat our pains at another local hot spot. Dtox Day Spa, 3206 Los Feliz Blvd., is celebrating its third anniversary. Save a receipt from a treatment in August, get $20 coupon for September. And the spa's Happy Hour Friday is Aug. 21, this time a detox/retox partnership with Bigfoot Lodge across the street. Soak it in, just like Lorelai Gilmore!

This Gilmore Girl, She Is Intrigued By Us

COMING UP IN TOMORROW'S "favorite weekend" column in the LA Times, Lauren Graham kicks it eastside:
"I tend to stay on the east side of town - I get nervous if I get west of La Cienega...

"I haven't been to Griffith Park since the fire, but it's been scary around here since then. The coyotes are getting really bold...

"One of the best places in town for Sunday brunch is here at Alcove Cafe & Bakery. Their eggs are delicious, and so is the bacon...

"Although I don't spend my weekends doing spas and beautification - I don't like to waste my time doing personal maintenance - I really have been wanting to go to a new spa called dtox in Atwater Village. That's where the Eastside people are going these days...

"Sunday night my sister and I hit Mexico City in Los Feliz for some fantastic Mexican food...

"We'll occasionally go for Mexican at Malo if we're with my friends who live even farther east. They're Silver Lake people, and you have to compromise with the Silver Lake people."
Darn right you do. Thus completes my circle of fascination with All Things Gilmore, started here 13 months ago with the greatest Newbie celebrity sighting to date.

Soaking It In

FROM A VALIANT ATTEMPT to define an awkwardly worded new trend, "social spa-ing," in the May 6 LA Times:
"With bare feet soaking in a sudsy pedicure tub, Lanzi, an executive with Junior Achievement, is surrounded by his employees, who seemed to be having a good time making fun of the boss's calloused feet. Lanzi, for better or worse, invited the office to Happy Hour Friday at Dtox, a new place to socialize in Atwater Village near Griffith Park. Despite the name, Dtox isn't a bar, or a rehab joint, but a day spa that once a month throws open its treatment room doors to add a social element to massages, facials and pedicures...

"Dtox, the eight-month-old spa in Atwater Village, is built around a tropical-feeling central lounge, where men and women flock to the monthly happy hour, pay $39 to $99 to hang out, sip wine and get mini treatments such as pedicures and massages. Together but, thankfully, clothed."
For nearly a year our neighborhood spa has been working out east-sider kinks. Let's hope Dtox also worked out some early customer service kinks.

Better Than Being Recently Hip-Replaced

Members of the Southern California press take a day off from drooling over Asia Los Feliz to slap some saliva across the street.

From a Whole Life Times write-up of Dtox Day Spa:

...Happily a new spa in the recently hipster-ized Atwater Village offers eastsiders a tranquil respite from abusive city life. In their ample 6,000 square feet of exposed brick and lofty ceilings, Dtox has created an oasis of steam and sauna rooms, soothing waterfalls and a spacious atrium offering comfy couches, tea and fresh fruit.

Let's hope this means Dtox rid itself of the "abusive city life" at its front desk. Nothing erases the benefits of a $100 massage faster than a persnickety receptionist.

Viral Video for Dtox

From Code.tv, a tranquil two-minute promo for Atwater Village's Dtox Day Spa. Says owner Ken King: "We picked Atwater because it's an up-and-coming area. It's kinda hip, bohemian." Fast-forward to the part where host Shira Lazar takes off her clothes for a four-handed male-female massage, then tries to speak in complete sentences. Bohemian? Try bacchanalian.

Just across the street from Dtox, Asia Los Feliz also gets a Code.tv puff piece.

Dtox Day Spa Opens

Based on these last couple of posts, you'd think the chamber of commerce is taking over the Atwater Village Newbie blog. Alas, no, it's just a newsy week for trendy businesses in the hood. Especially those eschewing capital letters.

  • dtox day spa open house July 22 & 23, 10am-4pm
