Sepan Chicken Has Menu, Officially Opens Monday

BUT THAT DOESN'T mean that the Chowhounders who already tried it have much good to report: "Reasonable at $6.99, I opened the Styrofoam container to find a shriveled thimble size whole bird, too lanky even to be a Cornish game hen... Now of course, Monday, the grand opening, may portend a totally different and vastly improved bird, but it's up for one of you guys to find out."

Confirmed! Tommy's Burgers Out, Sepan Chicken In

Sepan Chicken SignTHANKS TO A crappy drive-by cell-phone photo and some investigative work by Eater LA, we can confirm that the former Tommy's Char-Broiled Burgers, 3324 Glendale Blvd., is now something called Sepan Chicken. Someone should go try it and tell us about it. And see if you can find out if it has anything to do with Sepan Banquet Hall up the street.

Has Tommy's Burgers Become a Chicken Joint?

A LOYAL READER crosses the road:
Do you know anything about this new joint that seems to have literally overnight replaced the Tommy's Char-broiled Burger place in Atwater Village (I believe 3324 Glendale Blvd.)?

The signage says Sepan Chicken I believe... Any info on the connections/owners?

You know, sometimes places rent out their places for a movie/TV shoot and the art department does a temporary adjustment... Maybe that's it...
Hmm, there's Sepan Banquet Hall up the block at 3404 Glendale Blvd. Any relation? Anyone know what the cluck is going on?

And That, Angelenos, Is What We Call 'Hail'

Hail Collects Out Front
IT USED TO BE a regular occurrence where we lived 3 years ago, in volatile-weathered Colorado, but this is the first time we've been through a genuine hail storm since moving to Los Angeles. Almost didn't recognize the pling pling pling of pea-size ice hitting roofs and hoods at 11:15 p.m. tonight. The drop lasted maybe 10 minutes, but it was enough to make many Atwater Villagers peer outside to see what was the clatter.

UPDATE: Welcome, Defamer readers!

Shepard Fairey Propaganda Twofer: Esquire, Time

Shepard Fairey Twofer
WHEN WAS THE last time 2 major national magazines put the same artist's work on their covers? (Within weeks, no less.) From neighboring neighborhood Echo Park, artist and designer Shepard Fairey has produced 2 covers featuring President Barack Obama.

Time ran what seems to be an original portrait, the President'slips parted, on its Dec. 29, 2008, issue. But Esquire's February 2009 issue, in mailboxes this week, ran what appears to be the same closed-mouth portrait from Fairey's famous "Hope" campaign poster.

Good for Shepard. How did he swing it? This is surely the final nail in the mainstream-media's-in-the-tank-for-Obama coffin that certain skeptics (sore losers) have been waiting for.

Judge to 'Monster' of Atwater Village: Die!

A SUPERIOR COURT judge today honored a jury's recommendation and sentenced to death the LA gang leader known as the Monster of Atwater Village:
Timothy Joseph McGhee, 35, sat handcuffed in an orange jail uniform as Superior Court Judge Robert J. Perry said McGhee treated killing "as some kind of perverse sport, as if he was hunting human game." [LA Times]

Earthquake? Rattling in Atwater Village, Sherman Oaks

THE SOFA SHOOK and the bookshelf rattled for 2 to 3 seconds here at home in Atwater Village, about 7:50 p.m.

Meanwhile, on the other end of the phone, Mrs. Newbie felt some shaking in her car. She was at a stoplight in Sherman Oaks.

Quick, gentle, couldn't have been more than a 2 or 3. Anyone else feel it?
UPDATE #1: Well. It was a 5.0 near San Bernardino, about 50 miles east of Atwater Village and the Los Angeles city limits, at 7:49:46 PM. The USGS gives my shake report an estimated intensity of II.

UPDATE #2: Revised to 4.5. Not the Big One, but certainly more than the 2 or 3 I thought it was. Shows you what I know, this being only my second quake.

What 2,763 Pounds of Food Looks Like

THIS IS WHAT the Atwater Village's Pampered Bird shop (3183 Glendale Blvd.) looked like before the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank picked up our neighborhood's donation: 3,852 items, more than a ton of food. The drive was organized by PB's Lourdes Rivas who, by the way, knows like 2,763 things about Bengalese finches.

Woof Boutique Already Ready for Valentines Day

SOMETHING WE'VE noticed for months now: The first (and sometimes only) Atwater Village storefront themed for each holiday is Woof Dog Boutique, 3172 Glendale Blvd. Their Christmas trees were barely recycled when their giant red heart went up for Valentines Day.

We don't know yet what Woof learned from the appearance on the Peter Perfect business makeover show (their episode is Saturday) but I bet it had something to do with holiday theming. (And maybe community involvement; they've also become active sponsors of many neighborhood activities!)

Atwater Chatter: First Full Week of 2009 Edition

NEW YEAR'S NEWS from this sliver of northeast Los Angeles that we've been calling home for nearly 3 years. (Can we still be Newbies? Hope so!) The chatter:
  • We had ourselves a nasty Sig Alert on the southbound 5 through Atwater Village this morning. Fuel spill.

  • And a New Years Eve theft from vehicle on Veselich and Edenhurst.

  • Los Feliz Cafe, the one at the muni golf course, is re-opened and slightly better than ever, says Starvin' Like Marvin. New ownership. Maybe new Armenian dishes coming?

  • Our city councilman got married and wants to stay in his job.

  • But our US Congressman might leave us and go work for Obama.
