Speed Humps Coming to Valleybrink Road

ONE OF THE longest stretches of unregulated residential asphalt in Atwater Village, with some 1,600 feet of acceleration space, is getting speed humps. After 2 years of traffic studies and petitions, 4 speed humps will be installed on Valleybrink Road between Sunnynook Drive and the 5-way intersection at Dover Street. Signs went up a few days ago. The humps (not the shorter bumps found in parking lots) could be installed any day. The speed limit on this stretch has always been 25 m.p.h. But the gentle, long curve of Valleybrink seems to encourage speeds of 40 to 50 m.p.h., especially on sweeping days when half the curbs are empty. So speed while you still can, child-hating scofflaws, before we start tearing your mufflers out from under you.

Intersection Update: Plants!

SUMMER HATH brought plants and flowers to the 5-way intersection where Valleybrink, Dover and Glenfeliz meet in central Atwater Village. The plants seem rather drought-tolerant and complete the new look for this $110,000 improvement. But will they slow down drivers and make them think twice before burning donuts in the asphalt? Time will tell.

Intersection Update: Nice Cones!

WORK SEEMED to stop a few weeks ago on the 5-way intersection where Valleybrink, Dover and Glenfeliz meet in central Atwater Village. New concrete and curbs have been in place (in an apparently futile attempt to prevent street donuts) but landscaping seems to have stopped at orange and brown. Are there some nice bushes and trees and flowers and stuff on the way? We hope so.

Freshly Baked Donuts at New, Improved Intersection

OH WELL. Within days of the City's installation of a $110,000 curb improvement to the large 5-way intersection where Glenfeliz, Dover and Valleybrink meet (you know, the one intended to prevent vehicles from dangerously spinning tire marks) today's new photo shows how someone came along just after 11:30am and dangerously spun tire marks. Bigger Menace: Screeching Tires or Skateboarders?

THE NEW $110,000 triangle at Dover, Glenfeliz and Valleybrink is designed to prevent vehicles from doing dangerous donuts in the middle of this 5-way residential intersection. Still under construction, the new triangular curb is already attracting another annoyance, according to an AVNC forum post: skateboarders. Just wait till summer, when who knows whatall could happen here in the neighborhood's tiniest pocket park. Picnickers? Lemonade stands? Eric Garcetti for Governor rallies? Stay tuned.

Getting Rid of the Street Donuts: $110,000

THE LARGE 5-way intersection where Glenfeliz, Dover and Valleybrink meet in central Atwater Village is sporting some new tire marks. A neighbor provided a photo of these new Tokyo Drift-style donuts, just a block from Glenfeliz Elementary School, "made by a very large Chevy Silverado truck that could have easily lost control and ended up in one of our homes." The City of LA has a plan. An intersection improvement project, sponsored by City Council President Eric Garcetti's office, reduces the empty space in the intersection, making it less attractive for these types of vehicular shenanigans. (Blatantly rolling through the stop signs, though, will still be an option.) CD13 will pony up most of the $110,000 cost and this week asked the Atwater Village Neighborhood Council to contribute $20,000. Stay tuned for more details about the plan, and whether or not it impacts speeders on Valleybrink.
