One Thing to Eat in Atwater Village Before You Die

EVERY SUNDAY at the Atwater Village Farmers Market (3250 Glendale Blvd.) is a chance to try one item from Jonathan Gold's 99 Things to Eat in LA Before You Die. Bigmista's Pig Candy is from Bigmista's Barbeque, of course, a mainstay at our neighborhood's Sunday market. Here's what Gold says in the LA Weekly:

"Pig candy is the vernacular name for a snack made out of smoky, thick-cut bacon baked with lots and lots of brown sugar until it transforms itself into demonically fragrant slabs that bear more than a passing resemblance to pork-belly terrine. You want some of this stuff. Really you do. And if you should happen to be in Atwater on a Sunday morning, you should probably swing by the barbecue concession 'round the back, because Bigmista and Mrs. Mista will set you up with the best."

LA Times: Atwater Village Farmers Market Saved!

FROM TODAY'S Los Angeles Times: "The 4-year-old Atwater Village farmers market, which runs on Sunday mornings in a bank parking lot, has escaped a threat of eviction, a [Wells Fargo] bank spokeswoman says ... The bank had some complaints about homeless people who were drawn to the Glendale Boulevard site and about its upkeep. Bank and market representatives, along with someone from LA City Councilman Eric Garcetti's office, have a meeting scheduled next week to try to negotiate a solution."

Is Atwater Village's Farmers Market in Danger?

ACCORDING TO a loyal Newbie reader, Wells Fargo Bank may try to put an end to the Atwater Village Farmers Market. Posted on the AVNC forum: "The general manager of Wells Fargo, who to date has been incredibly generous in letting the Farmers' Market open in their parking lot on Sundays, and who was a major sponsor of the incredible Tree Lighting this year, is threatening to terminate the FM's licensing agreement." The Wells Fargo bank location at 3250 Glendale Blvd. may want to open for Sunday hours, we're told, precluding the 4-year-old Farmers Market from operating in its parking lot on Sundays, 10:00am to 2:00pm. And even though it seems unusual in this ATM/Internet age that anyone really needs access to bank tellers on Sundays, this move by Wells Fargo may call for a letter or two. Atwater Village Farmers Market Expands

FROM THE LA Weekly: "The Atwater Village Farmers' Market is responding to the expanding seasonal bounty with an extra row of vendors. The market in the Wells Fargo Bank parking lot (3250 Glendale Blvd.) on Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. added Bolanos Family Sprouts, organic peaches from Naylor Farms, Simms Cherries, and Asian greens from Salacup Farms to the regular roster."

Going 'Green' at Atwater Village's Farmers Market

IT TURNS OUT shopping at the Sunday neighborhood farmers market might do something to prevent the destruction of glaciers. Or something. At least that's the impression I get from watching this "going green" report by ABC7 TV: "It's the price of gas I think that has made people think a little bit more about improving their lifestyle and giving back to the earth," said Joyce Chan a shopper at the farmer's market in Atwater Village, [edit: actually, she's the market organizer] where shoppers can buy locally grown produce. The Los Angeles news channel has not, to my knowledge, aired any follow-up report on what secret ingredients might be in the No-Name Hummus we bought at yesterday's farmers market. My report: Tasty!

Atwater Village's Farmers Market 'Less Sceney' Than Silver Lake's

FROM A BLOGGER who gets her veggies on both sides of the river: i've been addicted to farmers market's lately. we go to the silverlake market saturday mornings and the atwater village market on sundays. i like picking flowers for the house and vegetables for cooking dinner. i prefer the atwater village market to the silverlake market because the people are less sceney at the atwater village market.
