DO YOU NEED a car to live in Atwater Village? Maybe not. Our 8,000-resident neighborhood scores 19th out of all Los Angeles hoods with a walkability score of 77 (out of 100) according to WalkScore.com. Central AV does better, scoring 86 at Glendale and Glenfeliz Boulevards. Both scores earn a rating of "Very Walkable: It's possible to get by without owning a car."
Los Angeles Neighborhood Walkability ScoresIt's true, most amenities are footsteps away. Even real grocery stores (Trader Joe's, Gelson's) are just a mile walk over the Hyperion bridge. Harder to walk to: movie theaters, malls, jobs, the ocean. See WalkScore.com.

Century City gets an 84? The place is a pocket Irvine.
Woot woot! I always walk up to Glendale for our shops or down Fletcher to Home or Astro. And it's not too far to just pop into one of the watering holes on Hyperion. That's one of the things I love most about Atwater.
Where is "new downtown?"
While I think Atwater is fairly walk friendly, Walk Score's metrics are pretty basic and broadly categorize businesses improperly. Not to mention it does not take into account the quality of the business. For example, El Canonazo #1 counts as a grocery store just like Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, Vons, etc. Oh how I wish it were a legitimate grocery store....Sadness.
Oh come on! I don't even see Echo Park mentioned, and I know that gets walkers.
